Make sure the wireless capability (switch) is shut off before you get on the pane, if they are wireless. They can interfere with the planes electronics. They should always be shut off on planes and in hospitals. The duty thing should not be a problem as long as they are not over your duty free limit allowed into the country you reside in. Ask your customs office what your limit is and how long you have to be out of the country to qualify for it, before you go

Will my US appliances work in Spain

Will my US appliances work in Spain?
I'm going to Spain in December and I want to bring my laptop, cell phone, iPod, hair dryer, hair straightener and other things to Spain. But my mom has told me that the outlets and plugs are different or something like that. So will i be able to plug them in and will they work?
Packing & Preparation - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No, they will not work without purchasing a converter to go from US to Euro specs.
2 :
They will not work. you will need an adaptor to plug your appliances in. You can buy adaptors when you get to spain. Hoped this helped :)
3 :
You will need an adapter for each appliance since the outlets are different. These can be bought cheaply at any hardware store. The second thing you need to know is that the voltage in spain is 220V compared to 110V in the US. fortunately most appliances today are dual-voltage meaning they work in both countries. you should check out somewhere on the appliance or its adapter to see if this is the case. If it says only 110V then you are better off buying a new one in Spain. From my experience I can tell you that your iPod, Laptop, and cellphone are a sure thing. the others I advise to check the voltage label it is usually somewhere at the bottom or next to the cord or on the adapter

Nope, try to get hold of.. I think it's called.. west europe adaptor, 2 round pins, slightly smaller than those of eastern europe. Have fun, come to Madrid!
3 :
You have to check first that your AC adaptor can handle 240 Volts. If so, you will read INPUT:100-240V in the adaptor. Second, you will need a plug adaptor since in Spain (and in most parts of continental Europe) the legs of the plug are round not flat. Once in Spain you can buy one in the airport for 4-6 Euros, or outside the airport for 1-2 euros (they have a lot of turists, so it is pretty common to find this adaptor and they know what you are looking for)

Studying abroad in Spain -- what adapters/converters do I need

Studying abroad in Spain -- what adapters/converters do I need?
I'll be living with a host family in Spain during fall semester. I know I need to buy an adapter for my laptop, as well as an adapter and a voltage converter for my hairdryer. Can you tell me specifically what adapters and converters I need to buy? I heard that I also will have to buy extenders for my adapters, as the prongs in Spain are changing yet again. True?
Packing & Preparation - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Don't take anything that needs a voltage converter. Also, appliances like hairdryers usually don't work properly via a converter. Just buy the items in Spain - it will cost about the same as buying a voltage converter and will work better. Luggage shops in the USA sometimes sell hairdryers that are dual voltage and all you need is an adapter. However, travel hairdryers are usually small. Also check: www.travelsmith.com As far as I know, outlets in Spain use the standard Continental European 2-round-prong plug. Outlets are often recessed, but all of the adapers I have ever bought were designed for a recessed outlet.. Regarding your laptop, check at stores like BestBuy and CompUSA for a multi-adapter that is also a surge protector. It costs more than a straight adapter but not cooking your power supply is worth it. Whatever adapter(s) you get, make sure they fit your USA plugs (try them on the plugs - don't just buy some adapters and toss them in your suitcase). For example, laptops almost always require an adapter that accepts a USA 3-prong plug. Hope you have a good trip

Can you set up a wifi service with your mobile (cellular) provider that will also work on the continent? You should then be able to buy your own access antenna (maybe that's what the modem dongle is but the term is new to me) if it is not provided by the service provider. Of course, rural Spain may be it's own problem for phone service, let alone wifi

Traveling to Spain, what kind of outlet adapter do I need and where can I get one from?
I really do not know anything about this stuff so pleas be as specific as possible. I will need to plug in things like my laptop, cell phone charger, hair dryer, flat iron, and like other little things.

An adapter is nice but it will only allow you to plug a US item into a Spanish socket, it won't convert the voltage, for that you need a converter, a must for your laptop Spain works on 220v http://international-electrical-supplies.com/spain-plug-adapters.html Adapters http://www.dvdoverseas.com/voltage_converters.htm Converters
2 :
If you're bringing devices like a cell phone charger, camera charger, laptop or other electrical device, you'll need a plug adaptor to plug it in. If you're coming from North america, you need something like this for most of Europe (the UK is different): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie… . these will be available in places like Radio Shack, Walmart, Brookstones, most luggage stores or airport shops. You can also find the adapters here in Europe. Although the voltages are different here, you will not need a voltage converter if your devices are designed for both electrical standards. You can verify this by checking the power supply of your laptop and other devices. The label will say something like Input: 100-240 VAC 50/60 Hz. That's telling you that it's designed to work with both the voltage & current in the US and in Europe. If you have something like a curling iron or hair dryer, it may not work with both voltages. In that case, you would need a voltage converter to avoid damage. I have several laptops and other things like camera chargers here and have never needed a voltage converter; most modern electronic devices are designed to work with both standards. What you might need the converter for are the hair dryer and flat iron. Again check the product literature for the input voltage and current. If you can use them with the higher voltages here, you don't need a converter. If not, then you can either buy a converter or just pick up an inexpensive iron and hair dryer when you arrive (that's what I did)

Yes, you will need a converter. A really good travel store will carry a set that you can match to the plug in whatever European country you're in. I was able to use my set in France, Italy, Switzerland and England. Just had to match the converter out of my kit to the plug!
2 :
We have 2 round pin plugs and you have 2 flat pin plugs and for this you can buy adapters many places including airports. Far more important is your voltage in USA is 110 v and ours is 230v so your equipment must be able to deal with this higher voltage or ......... you get a smell of burning and smoke. For electronic stuff it is also important that your frequency is 60 cycles and ours is 50 so anything which uses the mains frequency (mostly things like tvs, radios etc) will not work.
3 :
Yes yo do...
4 :
Mmmmm...yes. The same one as for anyother European country (continental, that it, UK not included)

You should be able to connect to wireless internet in Spain without any additional components on your computer. However, you will need a power-converter because the plug you use to charge your laptop in the United States is not compatible with power socket configurations or voltages in Europe. You can easily buy adapters at any Radio Shack or technology store for pretty cheap prices. They also sell packages that include adapters for many different regions if you're a big traveler.
2 :
You can use your laptop to go online in any country the only issue is you need to know the pass phrase or the web key in order to connect to the wireless network (if they have one ). Almost all the hotels , malls are wi-fi enabled spots and they might get your MAC address or give their pass key in order to go online . Many of them just allow you to use it without any authentication .You just need to have a laptop with a built in wireles NIC card (most of them have one by default).Don't worry Happy holidays ;-)
3 :
Your ISP has nothing to do with it, that's why they can't provide information. If your hotel has wireless internet, you should be able to connect to it provided that your laptop has wireless connectivity. The people at the hotel can probably show you how to connect to it, if they have a password or whatever, but really it's simple, but different in every operating system. Since you didn't tell me what operating system you have, i can't really tell you how. Just a random thought... if you were from Spain and spoke Spanish, and someone wanted help with their computer, which was in English... it would look weird... unless you knew English.
4 :
go to radio shack for the power adapter for your power supply and get a month pass from ATT for internet access and you are good to go! that is all I had to do... its that easy. good luck

2 :
Yes, I've done it a few times. (not to Spain but overseas) It just becomes a hassle when you go through security checks and have to slide them through the x-ray machine separately.
3 :
Yes it is. Laptops are allowed as long as they don't exceed the limit of weight you're allowed to carry on or check in
4 :
I can't give you a source but you can bring as many as you want as long as they don't go over the allowed weight/size limit for the airline. Laptops aren't an "illegal" item on flights so it doesn't matter how many you take with you. As long as they all work and you can show this to the security guards, it'll be fine. (My uncle flies with two laptops for his job and has no problem.)

What can I do if my laptop was stolen from my hotel room in Madrid, Spain

What can I do if my laptop was stolen from my hotel room in Madrid, Spain?
I already reported the incident to the hotel manager and filed a police report. They told me that the hotel insurance company would contact me. What are my rights? Has this ever happened to someone?
Other - Europe - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
From my experience of hotels in Spain, I've not known one yet that accepts responsibility for theft from the room of a guest. I stayed in one last week and it was made quite clear, in the welcome pack, that the hotel would not be responsible for losses/thefts from rooms. Safes are usually available & advisable, but I do appreciate you wouldn't find one large enough to accommodate a laptop. As you say that you reported it to the Police, you will need to produce evidence of that report to your own travel insurance company, from whom you should recover the value of your stolen property. I hope you are not another example of someone travelling without travel insurance. Good luck.
2 :
I really doubt that the hotel is sincere in that their insurance company will contact you. IF so, it will take ages and by then you are long gone back home. Get their insurance company name and their policy number and see how cooperative they are then. Those are your rights. I think they are just patronising you. Spanish insurance companies notoriously work very, very slowly. Has it ever happened to someone? All the time

Look for an Cafe bar with Free Wifi. In most major Towns you should not have any problem finding at least one - times are pretty hard for businesses over here at the moment and bars are doing everything that they can to attract business.
2 :
There's internet salas all over the place. I should think they would have wifi. TONS of cafés do...like Starbucks, etc., in the US.
3 :
When asking a question like this, why don't you tell us where in Spain you are going to. Where are you staying. If you want a good answer, ask a good question. The question you asked is rather vague!
4 :
Many locutorios also offer internet service, but they'll want you to use their machines.
5 :
You can get yourself a pay as you go internet connection with a low cost provider such as Simyo. Prices are from 7 to 25 €/month, depending on your usage

How common are internet cafes in Spain

How common are internet cafes in Spain?
I'm studying abroad in Spain for a year (high school) and am wondering if I will need to bring a laptop. How common are internet cafes- especially in the suburbs?
Other - Spain - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Whilst Internet Cafe's are still a relatively new concept in rural areas and the suburbs, you will certainly find them in the larger towns and cities. Wifi areas are gaining popularity aswell and are certainly more abundant than Internet cafes. Honestly, I would say that it really depends on the area where you will be studying and you would be better advised to research that area specifically, if you can't, then yes - bring a laptop, which are much cheaper to buy in the UK and US.
2 :
There are numerous privately owned call shops (locutorios) in Spain, inside of which you will find telephone booths and internet access. They are very, very reasonable for phone calls and use of their computers is cheap and charged by the hour, or part thereof. I have paid around 2 euros per hour in Southern Spain. An example of what one might look like is - http://www.girsoft.com/slt/
3 :
Like gas stations in the US...two or three on every block. They cost around a Euro per hour.
4 :
=] Common, depending where you are for WiFi coverage but there's also the option of MobileBroadband, which is when you buy a SimCard and connect to the internet this way Or you can BUY WiFi access. - many hotels/motels have Internet access, the Hotel in my town (which belongs to AC) charges 1€ for 20 minutes, but 1€ for 1h is more common
5 :
there used to be a lots of internet-cafes. Currently, since the ppl get internet at home, this kind of cafes have gone. But, if u have a laptop, u will be able to go to a normal cofee bar, or pubs, or restaurant. Currently, the most of the pubs (day pubs), have wi-fi. (at least since madrid till the cities in the north of spain.
6 :
Internet cafes are getting harder to find in Europe, especially Spain and France, as most students now have laptops and WiFi spots are easy to find. Suggest you bring your laptop especially as you're studying. Just remember to bring a plug adapter, and converter if necessary

If you're in a built up area or an area where there are some wireless networks within range, you might be able to pick up a wireless signal and connect to a network. However, you can only do this if the network is unsecured (i.e not password protected).

My best guess is look for an internet cafe (sometimes they will have wireless), or stay in a hotel with free wireless internet access. Maybe their libraries will have free wireless, too. I've never been to Spain, so these are just some ideas

The first thing to double check is that your laptop's power adapter says something like: Input: 110v-230v AC The upper limit must be at least 220 and can be higher (e.g. 230, 240). If that checks out, then all you need is a prong adapter that will change the prong configuration from classic US style to European style. You can pick these up fairly cheaply at the airport.
2 :
3 :
In Spain the power is between 110v. and 220 v. usually. Have a nice travel. See you. So long.
4 :
5 :
usually is 230 v in europe, sent adaptors of 110v to 230v

Where in southern spain may I buy a laptop computer

Where in southern spain may I buy a laptop computer?
I am looking for someone with knowledge of an electronic store somewhere in Andalusia. Algeciras, Marbella, Gibraltar. Thanks!

There are many computer shops... In Marbella you have the department store EL CORTE INGLES in Puerto Banus, they have a good choice, and you have the backup of their guarantee. In Gibraltar, you have less expensive prices (duty free shops) but on exit to Spain, you will probably have to pay the duty, so it may not be worth your while.. There is also "LA CAÑADA" Shopping center in Marbella . There you have a BOULANGER shop, good for computers, I got my last HP printer there... The FNAC has a good assortment of computers also. And the ALCAMPO hypermarket in the same mall might also be worth looking into. Check the prices at all three, than choose your best bet. You can take a stroll to all of them in the Shopping Center in less than a half hour. Boulanger is near the main entrance outside the mall. The Alcampo is in the center, and the FNAC is at the far end over the the underground parking area. I'm not well acquainted with Algeciras. But there is also a mall there with a CARREFOUR hypermarket, you could probably find similar shops in or around it. Or you could look for INFORMATICA in the yellow pages (paginas amarillas.es) Good luck...Hope you find what you are looking for

Check the site of your laptop's vendor to see what the specifications are and if they sell an adaptor for overseas. Once you get the adaptor part number, you can do a web search and see if you can get a better price on it.
2 :
You can get Foreign Travel Plug Adapters at Circuit City or some place like that. They are not very expensive $10 - $20. They include all of the different adapters for different countries

How could I watch a film bought in America in a laptop bought in Spain. Is there any software for this

How could I watch a film bought in America in a laptop bought in Spain. Is there any software for this?
It looks like systems vary depending on the geographical area. I have tried to change the menu provided by windows, but the computer says that "only the administrator can change the geographical area". I would like to know if there is any software I could download from the internet, or if there is any other solution I could try. Many thanks!

AnyDVD.........You can change the regonal code.
2 :
I think you have to change like, the region or something. maybe you just have to get a laptop from spain?
3 :
Hi! I presume this is a DVD. DVDs are split into geographical areas... 9 of them. Spain. as the entire Europe, is located in one area. USA is in another area. The DVD might not play since the areas ar not the same... Try using ASSUS DVD player... it might work :) Good luck!
4 :
I guess you are trying to play a DVD b'cos only in that case you face this issues. This is done to prevent DVD piracy. You can use something like power DVD or the windows media player 11 but there is a regionalisation option in which you need to select the default country. It happens a lot of times that lot of DVD's wont play saying that there is a regionalisation mismatch and the most strange thing about this is that you can only change it 5 times.
5 :
Pls check the System type and name and search for it on the net to get adequet info
6 :
Download DVDShrink, make a security copy of the DVD with it and play it, it will work for sure

If I buy a laptop in spain and then use it in the USA, will my IP address be spain or USA?

the ip address is assigned by the isp (internet service provider) so no it will be different once you change where you get the internet from. But the mac address is a different story :)
2 :
Your IP address is depend on your ISP. So if your ISP is from USA then you will have USA IP address. To find out what is your IP address check IP locators: http://www.ipaddresslocation.org http://www.find-ip-address.org

Best way to send laptop from the US to Spain

Best way to send laptop from the US to Spain?
My amazing family bought me a laptop for my birthday (thanks, guys!). The problem is that I'm in Spain and they are in the US. Anybody know the best way to get it sent here? Can I get around paying customs for it? If I HAVE to pay customs, how much would it be? Thanks! P.S. Looked around on the internet and got conflicting information. Anybody out there have any experience with this?

Really this should be posted in the U.S section because you want to send from U.S.A to España send it via recorded delivery, with extra insurance etc. make sure it's packed VERY well ... BUT the problem with post is, (I think the limits 100€ or something??) you COULD end up paying import taxes on the product - I don't know the exact price, but I'm sure someone can tell you Maybe even the U.S postal services website ! -- I've bought stuff from online U.S stores, and eBay stores in China. Usually items are marked as "GIFTS" but they've been small things - unlike a laptop which would have to be packed WELL (Basically don't let them open the box !)
2 :
I just bought a computer and it was sent from the UK to spain. There were no customs charges, though that may be because of the EU. However, you are receiving a gift and if that is what is on the douane label it may suffice. Ask the mailing company.
3 :
I know it is expensive, but I would use DHL or some other private carrier. Expect to be charged VAT on the machine

you might need to get a charger adapter because electrical standards are different here then they are in Europe
2 :
check this out
3 :
Don't worry about it at all. Your MacBook power cord will either plug in directly or you can buy a two dollar adapter from a small shop along the street in any city in Spain. Here in China, there are four different outlet shapes, so I have three different adapters. NONE of them are sold in other countries. You just wait until you come to the bridge, and then cross it. All Apple power adapters are universal for either 115volt 60 Hz U.S. or 230 volt 50 Hz rest of world. Apple are smart about this. They know a notebook will travel, so they make it travel-ready. Now if only SoniCare electric toothbrush was half as smart... 115 volt only! Those morons

Will a 2-Prong US to Spain Power Adapter work with my 3 Prong Laptop Power Cable

Will a 2-Prong US to Spain Power Adapter work with my 3 Prong Laptop Power Cable?
I have a power adapter that changes the tip of a power cable from the US standard to the Spain standard. My laptop has 3 prongs and the adapter accepts 2. It fits into it, but the 3rd prong just rests outside. I know the voltage over there is twice as strong, so will this work correctly?
Other - Electronics - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
NO! You will have no grounded electricity and will blow the inverter on your laptop in which case it will be useless. Do NOT even attempt this. Spend the $20-$30 and save yourself the trouble.
2 :
i hope to goodness this is not just a gimmick that changes from round plugs to flat plugs...make sure it down-steps the voltage too!!! but otherwise, yeah. the third prong is not essential in any country, it's just a "safety feature" - many homes in the US even don't have it. my one friend installed fake electrical sockets that have the hole for the third prong (but the hole is not connected to anything) and her laptops work fine.
3 :
The third is a ground, you should try and find an adapter that will accept a 3 prong plug. It' s not necessary, but its good to have. Your laptop should accept the voltage, look on the power adapter thing inline with the cord and look to see what its voltage rating is. It should have a bunch of written stuff , one of the lines will say "input AC 100-240v 1.5A" or something similar. If it does not read 100-240 but instead reads 110v, then DO NOT plug it in, the second you do it will break. my friends plugged in an xbox to a 220 volt system, they didn't even turn it on, something exploded inside almost immediately.
4 :
Yes it should work.... BUT you will not have any ground protection. So, if something goes wrong with your laptop power supply, it's going to fry. ADDED --- Never directly said the 3rd prong was to protect the equipment. Although it does limit the damage to the device while protecting you from electrocution.
5 :
Houjo and another correspondent seem to think that the earth ("ground") connection is to protect the equipment. It isn't. It is to protect you. If the laptop was designed to be used with an earthed mains lead (the handbook should tell you) it will still work with a two-core one but in the, albeit unlikely, event of certain type of fault in the laptop you may be exposed to mains voltage on any conductive part of the laptop

I suggest you get it in U.S. because usually it is more expensive in Spain because it came from the U.S. or if it is made in Spain usually it won't work here in U.S.
5 :
Well, what if i built you a laptop. I live in Florida, USA, but my laptops, particularly gaming laptops, are always so much cheaper that you would still save money after I ship it to you in spain. Just let me know how much you are willing to spend, then I will build up a configuration. Also, do you want 17" screen, 20" screen, 15" screen................. What video card and CPU do you want/prefer? Thanks and I am hoping to hear from you soon

The US has a couple Military Bases in Spain, anyway if you are near Roda Spain there is a Navy Exchange or also a Post Exchange on the Air Force Base in Spain, I am sure you can meet a Sailor or Airman who would not mind taking you to the Exchange to see what they offer in Laptops.

Shipping laptop to Spain, will I have customs problems

Shipping laptop to Spain, will I have customs problems?
I need to ship a laptop from US to Spain. Any recommendations for avoiding customs problems? Is it safe to ship to Spain?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers

1 :
Please be very careful it could be a SCAM. 1. Did you receive the money yet or are they asking you to ship first? 2. if you do have the money, was it paid by cheque/money order? (these are most definitely fake as you will find out in a few weeks). 3. Don't fall for emails that tell you that "someone" is holding the money for you and "go ahead and ship the laptop" 4. Did the person pay you MORE than you were asking for? Just some questions - sorry if this answer is irrelevant; I do not want to see you scammed.
2 :
If you're selling it, don't ship it unless you have the cash IN HAND. no checks, money orders, etc. CASH. and it may take some time to pass through customs but maybe not. more than likely, no

Will an American laptop work in Spain

Will an American laptop work in Spain?
My parents live in Spain where laptops are much more expensive. They would like to buy one here in America while visiting but are not sure if they will be able to plug it in in Spain where the voltage output is 230. Does anyone know?

Sure, I'm a spanish computer engineer. Out power is 230V so you need to make sure the power supply for the laptop will operate at both 110v for USA and 230 for here. Telephone sockets are the same so you can get dial up instantly from http://www.gonuts4free.com
